Paddle for the Planet
At the beginning of June, I helped organize the 1st Paddle for the Planet in Abu Dhabi with the ADOW surf ski club and despite the unusual windy weather plenty of paddlers of all kinds showed up to take part. This included SUPs, surfskis, kayaks and dragon boaters. Paddle for the Planet is a worldwide initiative that started in Dubai and in cooperation with World Environment Day helping to raise awareness about our oceans and protecting them. This year, money will go to support a marine wildlife reserve in Indonesia. There were around 50 people in Abu Dhabi paddling and at least twice as many in Dubai, together a great showing for the UAE.

Dibba Adventure
Dibba Sunrise
We headed for Dibba for the weekend for a dhow adventure with our friend Clint and some others. We had been up to Dibba in Oman a few times camping, but this was a first time sleeping on a dhow. Despite the dhow that we got ended up being much smaller then the one we reserved, we made the most of the weekend swimming, snorkeling, stand up paddling and climbing. We brought our inflatable C4 iSUPs with us and everyone enjoyed paddling in the coves and following the fish ,turtles and stingrayss around down below. We even found out they were perfect platforms for climbing the cliffs. Clint, Nick and I brought out rock climbing shoes and got a few chances to do some DWS, which was fantastic. In the morning we woke up at sea to a beautiful sunrise each mornings and moored in a bay off the Oman coast. It was beautiful, only thing I would change was time of year we did this cruise. The end of May is pushing it weather wise with no relief from the heat, even the breeze at night was extremely hot! Nonetheless we had a great time and definitely will do this again next year!

Ice Hockey in Hong Kong
Star Ferry
I started playing ice hockey in March and at the beginning of May found myself on the Abu Dhabi Women’s Team called the Storms and headed for Hong Kong for our first tournament. For many of the women it was our first ever ice hockey game! It’s one sport that I never got to play when I was younger, but would’ve loved to. I had been reading a website about how they had formed a local team in October and were looking for people to join. For some reason I didn’t find out about this until March, but thought why not, here’s my shot to finally play at 28 years old! I did go to the ice rink one day to make sure I could skate and then figured it was time to go to practice. By the end of the first practice I had signed up for the team and at the 3rd practice I was going to be going to Hong Kong.
It’s probably the most random thing I have done in a while, but then at the same time it’s just another sport so maybe not so strange. The women’s team is made up of mostly local Emirati ladies ages 15-27. There are a few expats, a few younger ones and a couple older ones like myself, but they have played hockey before. I think the best part of joining this team has been that everything and I mean everything has been given to us. Our skates, warm-ups, equipment and jerseys all funded by the club plus the trip to Hong Kong! In a nation where women’s sports are far less developed then what we are used to, even the creation of the team is a big step and very exciting to be a part of it from the beginning. The support the club has shown for promoting the sport has been great and the fact that they entered a team in the Hong Kong Hockey 5’s tournament is a huge step forward.
In Hong Kong we played 4 games against much more experienced teams and while we lost 3 games, we did actually tie one of them! Thankfully we had a few experienced players including our Coach from Canada who played with us and helped a lot. This tournament was a big learning experience for us all and really encouraging for all the ladies to get back to Abu Dhabi, practice more, work harder as we look forward to our next tournament.

Mom and Dad’s Surprise Visit
Mom and Dad at the Grand Mosque
We had been out for a friend’s birthday party on Easter Sunday when Nick told me that he didn’t want to stay too late and was pretty tired. While I thought we could’ve stayed later as we had practically just gotten there, he needed an excuse to get me home. While at home around 10 pm he pretended to call the laundry to come pick up the dry cleaning and I told him it was a bit late to be calling them. He told me they are open late and about 30 minutes later there was a knock at the door. Nick told me to get the door, but I responded with “you’re closer, you get it!” He then just yelled at the door, “come in!” I was like Nick, go get the door, they aren’t going to just come in.
I went back to my computer and the next thing I noticed when I looked up were my parents peeking around the corner. I was in shock! I couldn’t even say anything and was really confused! How did they get here and how did I NOT know about this! I don’t get surprised easily, it’s not that I don’t like surprises, I really do love them. It’s just that usually I find out earlier by accident and tend to ruin them. Nick with the help of Joe had planned this one out and I had absolutely no clue. They would’ve tried to surprise Joe too, but with him traveling most weekends it would’ve been a bit harder to coordinate.

The first thing my mom did was unpack her bags with Easter baskets, not a surprise! We opened those and I still couldn't believe they were here in Abu Dhabi. Over the next 10 days we showed them the sights of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai. It was a great visit and was so happy that they came to see us all and can now picture where we are and what we are doing while living in the UAE.

Istanbul, Turkey
We visited Istanbul in late March for 5 days with our friends Jess and Andre. The weather was great, sunny skies and cool around 50 degree, a big change from the heat we are used to in Abu Dhabi. We even had a bit of welcomed rain the final two days, which was fine by us as we usually go an entire year with in AD without seeing it!
Istanbul was great and it seems like all we did was eat, which isn't a bad thing and always an important part of experiencing a new place. We stayed in Sultanhamet, which is just at the edge of the Bosphurus river on the European side of Turkey and is the old part of Istanbul. It's a pretty famous area, known for its history and we spent plenty of time visiting these must sees: The Blue Mosque, Ayasofya, Basilica Cistern as well as the old central souq and various other places along the way.
We took a cruise up the Bosphurus and what a very busy waterway. We weren't on the biggest boat, but there were much smaller ones that I swear were either going to capsize from the wake of the big ferries or get hit as they weaved in and out of traffic. It was an afternoon cruise and headed along the shore on the European side where we saw all of the Istanbul Universities lined up along the waters edge and some extremely expensive hotels too. As we crossed over to the Asia side, it was line with plenty of very expensive houses, castles and palaces that have existed for hundreds of years. Heading back we enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the Ayasofya from the water and despite the cold temps, we managed to stay up on the top deck the whole tour, thankfully laid out and kept warm by some huge comfy pillows.
Nick's no. 1 to do in Turkey was to eat as many pides as he could. Australia has a ton of pide shops all over town, which are Turkish pizzas and he was hoping to not be disappointed by visiting the place where this favorite originated. Thankfully it wasn't hard to find these and we ate plenty of them. I think almost one each day! I still think though the ones in Australia were even better, sorry to say. In addition to pides we feasted on plenty of other turkish food and plenty of mezze platters with some very delicious items on them. One of our favorites was a simple spicy diced tomatoes called Acılı ezme, which was delicious on bread. I enjoyed eating the loaded potatoes (kumpir) and awesome waffles filled with chocolate, fruit, nuts, etc. that we found one afternoon. What was great about Istanbul was all the outdoor cafes, where you could sit down warm up with some tea, coffee, or this drink that tasted like rice pudding and was delicious and just relax. Most of them had backgammon sets, so we found ourselves taking in the afternoon a few times trying to remember how to play and enjoyed doing some people watching around us.
cafes and backgammon
Our hotel, the Sebnem, was a great little hotel/guesthouse close to the water and nearby restaurants in Sultanhamet. We picked it based on the roof top terrace we saw in the photos and hoped for some sunny skies while we were there to enjoy it. The hotel far exceeded our expectations as the staff was extremely friendly and we had a wonderful spread of fresh pastries, coffee and juices each morning while enjoying the rooftop terrace. In the evening we would often go up to see the lights come on at dusk and have a drink before dinner. Most houses/hotels in this area all had rooftop terraces, but this one was probably one of the best.It was a great trip and escape from Abu Dhabi with plenty to see, do and eat for a few days!
